Agricultural professionals from 10 countries received their graduation certificates on Monday 23 November 2015 at a ceremony to celebrate their successful completion of the first University Neuchâtel-CABI jointly coordinated integrated crop management degree.
The Masters in Advanced Studies in Integrated Crop Management (MAS in ICM) programme was launched earlier this year by CABI in partnership with the University of Neuchâtel and the Canton Jura to help address the need to improve global food security.
CABI has built its first simulation to help agricultural advisors share knowledge on plant health with smallholder farmers across the world, and has plans to build more.
Plant Doctor Simulator is a fun and engaging way for plant health advisors – also known as plant doctors – to examine virtual 3D plants using smartphones or tablets. The rich and realistic gameplay allows plant doctors to investigate the symptoms of plant health issues, and make decisions on what are causing the problems.
Progress made by Plantwise in 2015 was the subject of the global programme’s annual Donor Forum earlier this month (October 6-7, 2015). The meeting took place in the Swiss Pavilion at the Milan World Expo where Plantwise is the focus of an interactive exhibit.
Kicking off the two-day session, Plantwise Executive Dr Ulrich Kuhlmann reported on progress from the past year of expansion and consolidation for Plantwise across 34 countries. Highlights included the updated Plantwise Strategy for 2015-2020, the development of a systematic monitoring and evaluation plan for roll-out in all Plantwise countries, as well as more than 850 newly trained plant doctors. An IPPC delegation led by Secretary Jingyuan Xia met with a delegation of senior officials from CAB International led by CABI CEO Trevor Nicholls on Thursday, October 22.
During the meeting the two parties drafted a letter of intent with some specific goals for the future which, once reviewed and finalized, should lay the foundation for a future program of work aimed at enhancing awareness of both organizations and the importance of plant health and protection. Among other things, the two organizations hope to participate in joint Plantwise/IPPC workshops and cooperate on the promotion of an international year of plant health.
